Would you marry yourself?
Sologamy is part of a growing trend where people date and marry themselves, one of the more heavily featured being New Yorker Erika Anderson who tied the knot last year.
Anderson planned a formal ceremony for a self-marriage as a way to celebrate her independence, and many others are joining up, with the help of websites like imarriedme.com, which provides all that a person needs to create their own ceremony, including a self-wedding ring, vows, and daily affirmation cards.
Those who engage say that it’s a way to affirm their self-worth, and some of the Jamaican women quoted below agree on its merits.
Margaret:
I would do it. I strongly believe women these days have no sense of who they really are and so they enter relationships seeking approval and validation. I think more women should do this – invest in themselves!
ST:
I have been single for almost 10 years and it has been an amazing journey. I wouldn’t trade this. Ladies, please invest time in you because it will be well worth it. This will surely give you confidence and it will force you to love you.
Deandra:
I think this is a crazy idea but I think it makes sense. I don’t think I would marry myself though, because that one is crossing borders for sure.
Jewel:
I saw in the newspaper a woman having a full wedding, and I thought she was crazy, but after I read why she did it, I understood why she would. Sometimes a woman has to go to extremes to change her life and I am all for women’s empowerment.
Munchy:
Yes. I actually wear a promise ring!
