Global mentoring walk to be staged in Jamaica
Jamaica will stage its second ever Global Mentoring Walk under the theme “Time’s Up” at Emancipation Park on Saturday, March 3, following a successful staging in 2016.
The event is being held in recognition of International Women’s Day next Thursday, and will unite women leaders and help to highlight the importance of peer mentorship between young women and established women leaders in society. This year’s walk will kick off at 7:00 am.
This year’s theme, ‘Time’s Up’, represents an urgent call to action for women to rally against issues such as sexual harassment and exploitation, wage disparity and other important issues.
One of the key expected outcomes of the walk will look at real actions mentors and mentees can take to help more women realise their full social, economic and leadership potential.
Flag bearer, noted social entrepreneur and Managing Director of Future Services International, Yaneek Page, stated that the walk is extremely important this year.
It is being spearheaded in partnership with Washington-based international organisation Vital Voices Global Partnership and will see thousands of women around the world celebrating the event globally. Vital Voices has helped to organise similar walks in over 51 countries around the world with over 7,000 participants.
The walk was created out of an initiative spearheaded by then first lady of the United States Hilary Rodham Clinton and is now focused on continuing the work of advancing women’s economic, political and social status around the world, by providing skills, networking and other support.
Organisers of the local event are appealing to women across Jamaica to participate in the mentoring walk as it presents a great opportunity for women to support each other and come together to share challenges and solutions to issues faced by women, and form supportive bonds that can foster growth and help to build confidence.
Participants will be able to receive and give valuable feedback and add immense value to their lives through the mentoring aspect of the walk.
