I almost cheated…but decided against it

BY PENDA HONEYGHAN

CHEATING is perhaps the most common reason for break-ups, and as such very few people are willing to acknowledge, even worse, admit when they cheated… or almost did. But we managed to find a few people who almost shook the grimy hands of cheating and betrayal and below they share why they decided against it.

Patria, investor, 34:

I was away on the summer work programme; it was my second year in college and I’d managed previously to ward off the many temptations that came with all the sexy men that I had seen the year before. I, however, was not able to take my eyes off this one guy, and this time, I, having never cheated before, had ammunition —my boyfriend, who had gone on a similar programme, cheated. His explanation was that he didn’t know what came over him.

Fast-forward to the middle of summer and the tension between this guy and I was so palpable my lady bits jumped almost every time I saw him. Then one night there was a party and I got really drunk and he offered to take me home. He made his move. I was too weak to respond, but I felt him on my lips and all over me. I felt like I was slipping into full unconsciousness when I heard myself say, “No, don’t!” And I remember a fuzzy image of him halting, then begging me in the most seductive voice to at least let him have a taste of me. I managed to say no and he left.

We didn’t know how to look at each other after that night, but I knew even in my state of drunkenness that I was not that kind of woman. I couldn’t allow myself to open up to someone else, even though my boyfriend had hurt me.

Amelia, student, 25:

I was two months’ pregnant and my boyfriend had been travelling and my hormones were raging. I couldn’t sleep without watching porn or having phone sex. Then this guy who I really wanted for a long time came to Jamaica and we decided to chill — as we had done many times before. Anyway, after being there for about two hours I was going to leave when he pulled me towards him. And, as God is my witness, I have never felt harder steel. I remember moaning and hearing myself, and I knew I had to head for the exit or I would be in trouble. Looking back I think the only reason I didn’t allow him to is because I was pregnant.

Tyrell, construction worker, 36:

I met this girl once on a work site, and everyday I would buy her something and she would flirt. One day she told me that she liked me. Now, I am no saint, but I was to get engaged the following week, and I honestly was trying to be different. Anyway, one Friday after work when only three of us were on site the girl backed me up under the cellar and started to gyrate on me. Naturally, I am going to react, and I always have protection. But when we started, her horrible smell hit my nose. And all I can say is that it must have been my relatives’ duppy that sent that scent, because I couldn’t do it, and I just had to lie and say that I heard somebody coming.

Camar, banker, 40:

I had begun confiding and developing a ‘work wife’ relationship with a co-worker who I was physically attracted to, and slowly becoming emotionally hitched to. Then my wife found out about it and demanded that I sever all ties, which I eventually did. What she doesn’t know is that this work wife, on our staff trip, not only got my other male co-workers to leave the room, but after coming and offering me a lap dance, almost had her way with me. I had to lock myself in the bathroom and remind her that both her and myself were married.

Shineka, bartender, 31:

I was about 23 with two children and never had any money to take care of them. Being so desperate, and my boyfriend being worthless, I didn’t want my children to go hungry. So when a rich, white guy said he would give me US$2,000 to spend the night with him, I went. He was nice, too, but it is just that my man is otherwise a good man.

As we were going to get into it my phone rang and my friend, the babysitter, said the baby was roasting with fever. I didn’t have any money at all so I was going to do a quickie and dash but I couldn’t do it. I decided that what I was doing wasn’t right and I should be there for my child. I told the man and, instead of being angry, it’s like God was on my side because he not only took me to my friend’s house and dropped me at the hospital, but he gave me US$750 as well.
