The extended common-law union
It has been said that when a man lives with a woman and does so for an extended period, he becomes complacent and seldom considers marriage. So ladies, what happens when you’re faced with the statement, “We already live together so we’re already married”?
Cassandra:
I ended a 10-year relationship in 2015 because all we did was live together with no promise of a future and no children involved. We moved in together in our fifth year of being with each other and he simply thought it wasn’t necessary to get married. And all I wanted was marriage and a family.
Carmen:
I have been living with my man for almost 20 years now and there’s still no ring. Yes, it is something I really want, but he clearly won’t ask and at this point I simply don’t think about it. But I will advise young women to avoid moving in with a man too soon. Wait for marriage, because once you move in, forget being asked for marriage.
Danesha:
I think it is a bad decision to move in with a man when you’re young and especially if it is marriage you’re seeking. I learnt that the hard way – I moved in with my ex and I was cooking, cleaning and washing thinking he was going to appreciate it and ask for my hand in marriage. I waited for six years and then he told me that he didn’t want to get married because we already had a good relationship and marriage would ruin that. I had to decide to leave.
Sheron:
I want marriage and currently my man and I have been living together for some years now and he is telling me he doesn’t want that. Yes, we have a great relationship, but I want something to join us even closer as a couple. I am now regretting moving into his house because I think he got comfortable with me living there.
Jennifer:
If it is marriage you’re seeking, do not move into a man’s house. If it is just a relationship you desire, then go ahead and move in.
