Stolen love

BY CANDIECE KNIGHT

SOME say the best revenge when a person steals your partner is to let them keep him/her, because a real partner can’t be stolen. For some, though, it’s not always so easy to know or admit that they are either stealing someone’s mate or theirs is being stolen.

The readers below share their experiences with stolen partners.

Mario, surgical assistant:

I didn’t really steal her, but I once got busy with my friend’s girlfriend because she asked me to. She was really thick and pretty and it would’ve been a sin to say no. I even left my friend at a football match to go back and be with his girl. Everything was going well until she expressed that she wanted a relationship with me, which I didn’t want. So she said she felt ‘used’ and told my friend. But I was really the one who was used.

Jhanale, pharmacist:

When I was in high school my friend told me that she and my boyfriend at the time were involved. It hurt at the time, but then again he wanted sex and I didn’t have it to give in to him, so I guess she gave him. She is still my friend though. I’m not sure what happened to the guy.

Tim, sales rep:

Two years into the relationship and she was telling me about the men who attempted to court her. One day she told me that this guy offered her a space in a line in exchange for her number. Usually she’s not that type of girl and it was a funny story so I overlooked it. But he was clearly making more than I was and had offered her the opportunity to go abroad and other exciting prospects. Fast-forward to four months later, she was very distant and unresponsive. She kept getting ‘gifts’ from her ‘friends’, and told me she needed “time to work on” herself. I knew there was someone else so I just accepted that I lost her and moved on.

Gayle, accountant:

Well, I didn’t really steal him. I was just entertaining him since his relationship was a long distance one. The girl left on her own, but I really didn’t have a problem with her.

Stacey-Ann, business owner:

It wasn’t really stealing. I think he wanted to leave her. I just became his friend and before you know it I was helping this man cheat because his girlfriend was not exactly putting out. And one thing led to another and, well, we got together. But we didn’t stay together. Turns out I wasn’t really into him after all.

Lisania, teacher:

We were friends in high school. He had a girlfriend and I knew her. She didn’t like me at all. Then we started university together, and she stayed back home. I assumed the role of side chick to him, and he hardly communicated with her (no fault of mine). Eventually I grew tired of the love triangle and told him that I was going to cut him off. He ended up breaking up with her because he didn’t want to lose me. The girl still hates me. She said I ruined her life, but I don’t feel bad about it.

Tami, PR officer:

I’ve never had a man for myself. Frankly, sharing is better. There’s less stress and less responsibility. We both agreed to use each other (or in better terms the ‘mutualism’ ecological relationship). And although it may be frowned upon or deemed foreign to some, it’s very convenient for me.

Kevin, computer scientist:

I have stolen quite a few girls. All of them introduced me as a friend and that we were; it’s just that in most cases we became closer than usual and when their partners slipped up, I was conveniently there to fill the void. I never really meant to step in. It’s just that apparently some men don’t feel as if they can be replaced, or be replaced by me.

Ajay, personal trainer:

Her man was moving ‘shaky’ and she was texting me about it and I told her I could come over and make it better. I went over and we did the deed, and I left, no strings attached. But she kept texting me and I kept going over and she eventually left him for me. But sadly for her, I didn’t want a relationship. She hates me to this day.

Sasha, nurse:

There was this one instance where I was in a relationship with someone and thought he was mine. He was actually with another girl. I did not find out until about three months in though. I saw messages from her saying that she missed him and how she was going to come to Kingston when she got a week off. I tackled him about it. He said they weren’t together but I knew he was lying. I didn’t care though because she was all the way in Westmoreland and he never left for the country. Eventually she just stopped texting him. Really and truly if I knew he was in a relationship I wouldn’t have gone there. I never took anybody’s man because I don’t want anybody to take mine.

Sheena, entrepreneur:

I never took anybody’s man but a girl tried to take mine once. I posted the screenshots of her begging to be with him on social media, and I have some more saved up in case she ever tries it again.
