Africa — Where The Heart Is
Ashenafi Abayomi and Sentwali Amen-Ra are the design duo behind the Afro-centric jewellery line Siwatu Jewellery.
Located in the cool hills of Mandeville, Siwatu is dedicated to bringing awareness of African culture to Jamaicans, and celebrating love and creativity through its handmade jewellery. It’s been a rather circuitous journey.
After spending three years of training to become navigational officers in college, they decided that sea life was not for them, and in 2013 changed course to entrepreneurship.
It took almost a year of exploring other business ventures before the couple decided that jewellery-making was a proper fit, and in 2014, Siwatu was officially launched.
“I decided that if I’m going to do anything business-oriented, I would have to have that African influence in it,” Sentwali told All Woman Fashion (AWF). “I feel it is really important for us to learn about ourselves.”
The Siwatu Jewellery line offers a collection of earrings, anklets, necklaces, bracelets, rings and pendants.
Each item can take anywhere between three to 14 days to create, depending on the design. Customers can also choose to have their pieces crafted from brass, copper, sterling silver and even gold.
