Losing weight after a health scare
Dear Donovan, I am seeking advice as it relates to the best way to go about losing weight after a second pulmonary embolism.
Pulmonary embolism is the sudden blockage of a major blood vessel (artery) in the lung, usually by a blood clot. The blockage of the artery can cause serious problems, for example, it can cause restrictions in the blood flow to the lungs thus damaging some of the lung tissue. In addition, it can cause a decrease in the oxygen levels which can affect other organs.
If the blood clots are large or multiple, death can occur. I see where you have had two episodes of pulmonary embolism and you definitely don’t want to have a third. I am therefore very happy that you are reaching out for help.
If your diet and general lifestyle were poor before the episodes of pulmonary embolism, I am sure your health care professionals would have recommended some lifestyle changes. It should be noted that how you eat as well as your exercise level will definitely help to control your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In a general way you would want to restrict your unhealthy fats and foods with high salt content. In addition, it would also be wise to avoid sugary and processed foods. On the other hand, it is good to consume more fruits, vegetables, vegetable juices and whole grains. Overall, your diet should make you lose weight as well as make you healthy. If possible, it would also be good to do a three to four-day detox programme. However, I would suggest you work with a professional on this. This detox will definitely help to clean the bowels.
Being overweight or obese is linked to a higher risk of blood clots. This is due to changes in inflammation, blood pressure, and possibly an increase in oestrogen levels due to an increase in fatty tissue. Being at your right weight for your height is very important. It is also important to eat foods with little or no cholesterol. Excess cholesterol can block the arteries and further compound the problem of pulmonary embolism.
An inactive lifestyle increases the risk of reduced blood flow and clot development. Activity/exercise will help to reduce stress as well as calories. A reduction in calories will also help in weight loss. Going forward, it will be important to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle
