The frisky 50s
THEY say that after 50, while some men might start to feel a little limp, women’s lives are just beginning. The children are old enough to care for themselves, the marriage is getting mellow or the divorce is finalised, the house is quiet and spotless, and your body is raring and ready to go.
Women over 50 can expect to either be perimenopausal or post-menopausal and some may have decreased libido, but other women will confess that the peace of mind that comes with the end of the menstrual cycle is enough to get them in the mood.
These oldies below are still goodies — they’re cooking up the hot stuff, not baking milk and cookies.
Merle, 60, business owner:
I have always been one to explore and try new things. I am very adventurous and I have a husband who knows just how to hype me up. We still do things like get busy in the pool and we are exploring every area of the house because our youngest just moved out. It’s been blissful. We are considering buying sex toys but every night now I go to bed smelling edible and making sure I dress the part because I don’t know when my tiger will bounce on me. Our relationship has never been dull but we want to try as many things as we can before my legs can no longer go on his shoulders.
Paula, 53, executive assistant:
A few years ago I had a close call with cancer so I decided to start living every day like my last. So although I am single, I am not growing any cobwebs. I keep myself fit in the gym, I eat healthy, and I have a special friend (if you know what I mean). I can say I am better in bed now than I was at 30. I feel better too.
Dorette, 58, office attendant:
Well, my common-law husband is 63 and he’s still got it. I don’t think any young boy could be so frisky. It’s just us at home now and the children know better than to come visit without calling first because we are finally doing all the things we had to hide and do when they were around.
Gwen, 63, retiree:
I’ve been divorced for a while and I haven’t found a new man I’m willing to settle with yet, but I still get my groove on. I have a laptop and an Internet connection, and I know my way around the Web. I have an old flame in New York who I video chat with sometimes and things can still get steamy.
Patricia, 59, secretary:
I like to read my Mills & Boon and Harlequin books when I’m in bed and sometimes my husband interrupts my reading and asks me to read a section out loud. This always leads to him trying to prove that he can do better than the men in the books. I still imagine the fictional men sometimes when I’m alone but like playing temptress with my husband.
Sheila, 65, nurse:
After my husband passed I was lonely for a few years but I recently met a gentleman in his 50s, and though we are moving slow, he is really working me up. We go out on dates, to church, and have romantic evenings together. It feels so silly to be fooling around and acting like teenagers but it’s wonderful. The flame is burning hot.
