Elaine Roach is striving for success
ELAINE Roach is a realtor at Victoria Mutual Property Services.
AW: What was your first job?
ER: In my first job, I worked as a customer service backend clerk at Jamaica Telephone Company, now Flow. The interviewer told me she was hiring me because I had such an infectious smile, and that I would be good at customer service. I started out as a temporary worker, then was made permanent. From then I started moving up through the ranks first as an acting, then appointed supervisor, then a marketing executive and later, a senior executive. Due to major restructuring at that time, the position was made redundant, but I was offered another position which I opted out of and chose instead to try something new. This became the birth of my career as a realtor.
AW: What would you say is your best career achievement to date?
ER: Having been with Victoria Mutual Property Services for about ten years, my best achievements to date are, firstly, being honoured as the first awardee for Victoria Mutual’s President’s Circle inductee for Sales Excellence in 2019; and being among the Top Sales Agents for the last four years (2016, 2018, 2019 and the second runner-up in 2020). These were surreal moments and I feel so blessed to have been selected for the various awards. Additionally, as of October 2020, I was successful in achieving my dealership licence which makes me eligible to operate my own real estate brokerage/dealership.
AW: When would you say you have worked the hardest?
ER: I work my hardest every day, as consistency is key. Striving for success and excellence is not working as you feel or at one’s convenience. It is a habit that you must develop by working hard and maintaining focus daily.
AW: What is your go-to place for motivation?
ER: My go-to place is my prayer chair in my study at home and interior decorating is my go-to activity, as this always gets the creativity flowing. I also enjoy motivating and encouraging others. I absolutely love sightseeing and adventure. I am driven by my goals and visions that I have set for myself and always strive to achieve excellence in that process.
AW: What is your advice to other young women who are looking to pursue a career in the corporate world?
ER: There is no easy ride or quick fix for success because that will cost you in the long run. With Christ at the helm, you must work hard, work smart, remain focused, be resilient, open-minded and guard your dignity and integrity at all costs. When you go through the process of achieving your goals, you appreciate your rewards a lot more which helps you develop meaningful life qualities, build resilience, and teach you about your own strength. You cannot shortcut the process.
