ASHLIE Barrett is the dispensary manager at Epican Medicinals.
AW: What was your first job?
AB: My first experience in the working world was with my father at 14 years old. It was a great experience because he never treated me like his daughter. It was a great foundation in understanding a positive work ethic and exceptional customer service skills!
AW: What would you say is your best career achievement to date?
AB: I would definitely say my best career achievement to date is working in management at Epican Medicinals Ltd. Simply because of the capacity of growth I’ve obtained through the incredible people I’ve worked with. Spreading awareness and uplifting our customers is also a gratifying and fulfilling achievement. I owe all my achievements to my mentors and customers.
AW: When would you say you have worked your hardest?
AB: I would have to say my hardest working year was with Sandals International as an entertainment manager-in-training. The hours were extensive and expectations for top-tier experiences high, but it was an amazing opportunity to turn the pressure into positive monumental moves for me as a young woman in management.
AW: Where is your go-to place for inspiration?
AB: It’s interesting how we develop with time, because a few years ago I’d tell you how much I hate the beach because sand got everywhere; but now the beach provides clarity and an opportunity to unplug; it’s so important to take some time away when you’re constantly plugged into your grind.
AW: What is your advice to young women who are looking to pursue a career in your field?
AB: I think management of any kind relies heavily on people skills and the ability to accept and work with a solution-oriented mindset. Emotional intelligence also goes a far way, especially in a fairly new industry where most standards and regulatory processes are still on the rise. All in all just be open-minded, flexible and confident in your abilities to lead and provide exceptional training and service. It is also important to continue to be innovative and creative. At Epican, we are also blazing a trail of originality. Right now we are embarking on the launch of new cannabis strains for our customers.
