Tarsha Marshall talks business relationships
Tarsha Marshall is relationship manager, Corporate Banking, Sagicor Bank Jamaica.
AW: What was your first job out of school?
My real first job was in retail in the United Kingdom at Littlewoods and Marks and Spencer Inc. After growing up in Spanish Town and attending St Jago High School I moved to the UK for university, and I did part-time jobs while attending university full-time for my bachelor’s degree. The discipline of balancing responsibilities with school was inculcated in my siblings and me by our parents and grandparents from very early in our childhood. After completing my first degree in business information technology I moved into a full-time role with Marks and Spencer, where I worked in various positions in sales, marketing, and customer service training.
AW: What would you say has been your best career achievement to date?
There have been many high points and achievements in my career since I began working, but one of the most recent rewarding experiences for me was being recognised by Sagicor as one of two top relationship managers for 2021. It felt amazing to be among the recipients at the group’s corporate awards after overcoming various personal and professional challenges in that year. I was pleasantly surprised by the award as I had been focused on trying to get my clients what they needed, not realising that it would come with recognition.
AW: At what point in your life would you say you have worked the hardest?
For as long as I can remember I have been a hard worker, but one of the periods that stand out is when I was working and studying in the United Kingdom. This often involved travelling on public transportation in extreme weather conditions and required immense discipline and time management to be successful, especially since I was working full-time while studying for my master’s in international banking and finance. I also work very hard in my current role as a relationship manager as I am always striving to assist my clients to achieve their business goals and strategies. It is very rewarding to see and hear the positive feedback from them.
AW: What is your go-to thought for motivation?
“Faith will get you to a point. Luck will get you to a point. But to achieve the kind of success you dream about; you need to work. There are no shortcuts, you can’t cheat life, you just get to work and don’t stop until you reach your highest potential.” – Denzel Washington.
This is one of those quotes that resonates with me, and it helps me to get up and get going when I am not feeling like my best.
AW: What is your advice to young women who are looking to pursue careers in the corporate world?
The world is your oyster. Be prepared to put in a lot of work, even while you strive to achieve a work-life balance. Working for only 40 hours per week will not allow you to achieve your dreams. You must dedicate time and apply yourself to what you’re passionate about. Give your best, love what you do, and do what you love.
