INFO YOU CAN USE: Getting a TRN for your child
THERE is no age limit in applying for a Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN); however, those under 18 will need the approval of a parent or guardian to do so. The TRN is required to apply for several Government benefits like the National Health Fund card, and the Government of Jamaica health card. Having a TRN is also a requirement for accessing training through National Youth Service and HEART, for those under 18.
The parent/guardian is required to submit a complete application form with their identification and TRN, accompanied by the child’s birth certificate and a form of identification (ID). A passport, school ID or certified passport-sized photograph are acceptable forms of ID for the child.
For the parent making the application, his or her name should be on the child’s birth certificate. Otherwise, additional documents will be required. Applications signed by a guardian should be submitted with the child’s birth certificate, professionally produced, certified passport-sized photograph or picture identification for child, identification and TRN of the guardian, a court order verifying the legal guardianship or voluntary declaration from the guardian and voluntary declaration from an attestor (a person who knows of the guardian/child relationship).
Once all the documents are gathered, the application can be made at any Tax Administration Jamaica office islandwide. A number will be generated within minutes of making the application.
