Welcome, January
THIS is not a resolutions list, or a resolutions push, or any such encouragement; in fact, we believe in adopting the mantra of ‘what is to be will be’, of doing what you like because you like it, of embracing what makes you happy, and living for the moment.
This kind of thinking ensures that even if you had a resolution goal for this year, and may even trash your vision board by week two, you know that it’s OK to start again, and again, and again. Your new mode of thinking should be that even if you make a mistake, it’s not a catastrophe, and you can bounce right back.
We sat down with a group of young women attending a Fruits of the Spirit manifestation session in Portmore in December, and here are some interesting and inspiring takeaways to guide you for the new year.
Make mental health part of your executive profile
Usually at the start of the year, we get health checks done, from blood work to STD panels to full body check-ups, to ensure that we’re fit and ready to face the new year. When you’re doing that this year, also include a mental health evaluation, by speaking with a counsellor, mentor, guide, or booking that therapy session. You have to treat both your mind and body like a temple.

Younger people have got this ‘down pat’ — they don’t need a list of reasons before they decide to do something. If their spirit leads them to do something, they do it; if it feels good they enjoy it; and if they don’t like it, they will quit, no regrets. Live in the moment.
Say ‘I love you’
Not many of us were raised with these three words, and it still makes some people uncomfortable, even to say it to their children. But it’s important not to wait to say it, and the more you say it, the more natural it will feel.
Invest in quality relationships
Look for quality over quantity — in friendships, and even the relationships with loved ones that you seek to foster. Invest in these quality relationships, give to them your all, and encourage and build with them, so you can be a better person.
Don’t go it alone
Life is going to be ten times harder if you’re doing everything by yourself, all the time. There’s nothing admirable about struggle. Don’t struggle alone — seek help in all the places it’s being offered. You may be surprised at the many sources of aid available to you, that you just need to tap into. Example, as a single mother, a church family can be great support for both your spiritual, social and financial needs, while providing a safe space for your children to flourish.
Be good, be bold
No matter what life throws at you, be good. Even when things are at their worst, be good. You may never get that apology fro whoever wronged you; that closure about a situation that keeps you up at night; that explanation from someone who wronged you, but the experience can still help you be a wiser, calmer, better version of yourself. Walk into the best year of your life for 2023, with the confidence that you can make happen whatever you put your heart and mind to.
