Dr Maria Myers-Hamilton: Helping to shape Jamaica’s digital future
“I’VE always believed that technology should never be an end in itself. Its true purpose is to improve lives, create opportunities and remove barriers.” For more than three decades, that philosophy has shaped every stage of Dr Maria Myers-Hamilton’s career.
From leading complex banking technology transformations to shaping regional telecommunications policy, her career has been defined by one consistent goal: Using technology to improve people’s lives. Today, as managing director of Spectrum Management Authority (SMA), she is helping to position Jamaica at the forefront of spectrum management and digital innovation. Her leadership has also earned regional and international recognition through roles with the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission, where she contributes to shaping the future of global radiocommunications policy.
Yet titles have never been what motivated her.
“When I started my career, I wasn’t chasing titles or recognition,” Myers-Hamilton reflects. “I was fascinated by solving problems. Every role presented a new challenge and another opportunity to learn. Looking back, I realise those experiences were preparing me for leadership — not simply because of the technical knowledge I gained, but because they taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of making decisions that affect people’s lives.”
Long before entering telecommunications regulation, Dr Myers-Hamilton built her career in Jamaica’s financial sector, where technology had to be dependable, secure and resilient.
She helped lead the integration of four commercial banks into Union Bank of Jamaica before serving as chief information officer at RBTT Bank (Jamaica), overseeing technology operations across several Caribbean territories. Those formative years, she says, shaped the leader she is today.
“When you’re responsible for systems people depend on every day, you quickly learn that technology is about trust. People may never see the infrastructure behind the scenes, but they rely on it to work every single day. That sense of responsibility has stayed with me throughout my career,” she says.
Since taking the helm of SMA in 2018, she has led an ambitious programme of regulatory modernisation. Under her leadership, the authority has introduced artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced licensing, expanded Jamaica’s spectrum monitoring network, and strengthened disaster resilience and advanced policies that improve broadband access, particularly for underserved communities. These initiatives have helped establish Jamaica as a regional leader in spectrum regulation and digital innovation.
While much of her work is highly technical, Dr Myers-Hamilton measures success differently.
“People often think of spectrum as something highly technical and invisible, but it touches almost every aspect of modern life. It enables communication, supports emergency services, powers innovation, and connects communities. For me, managing spectrum has always been about ensuring every Jamaican, regardless of where they live, has the opportunity to participate in our digital future.”
As one of the Caribbean’s leading women in information and communications technology, Dr Myers-Hamilton is equally passionate about ensuring more women see technology as a place where they belong. Through her roles as chair of the CTU Task Force for the Network of Women and incoming vice-president of the European Union-Latin America and Caribbean Foundation network of women leaders in digital policy, she continues to champion greater female participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while mentoring young professionals across the region.
“Women don’t belong in technology because someone decided to make room for us. We belong because our ideas, perspectives and leadership make technology better. Diverse teams ask different questions, identify different risks and ultimately build solutions that work for more people. That isn’t just good for women — it makes technology better for everyone,” she says.
Her advice to young women considering careers in technology is equally straightforward.
“Don’t let the absence of someone who looks like you become the reason you don’t pursue your ambition. Sometimes you have to become the person others will one day look to.”
Today, Dr Myers-Hamilton continues to represent Jamaica in international discussions shaping the future of telecommunications.
At home, she also serves on several national education and public service bodies, reflecting a career grounded in service beyond technology. Whether advocating for greater digital inclusion, mentoring future leaders or helping develop policies that will shape the next generation of innovation, her focus remains firmly on improving lives.
“Whenever I represent Jamaica internationally, I carry more than my own experience into those rooms. I carry the perspectives of a small island developing state, the aspirations of our people and the belief that the Caribbean has an important voice in shaping the global digital agenda,” she said.
When asked how she hopes to be remembered, she says: “If people remember me simply as someone who helped move technology forward, I’ll be grateful. But I hope they also remember that I never lost sight of the people technology was meant to serve. I want my legacy to be one of service, inclusion and creating opportunities for others.”
As AI and emerging technologies continue to reshape the world, Dr Myers-Hamilton remains guided by the same principle that has defined her career from the beginning: that technology is at its most powerful when it creates opportunity, strengthens communities and leaves no one behind.
For her, that isn’t simply a philosophy. It’s a legacy she hopes to leave.
