September 6, 2023

The role of the content marketing specialist

THE #1 form of marketing today is content marketing! Your content marketing specialist plays a vital role in your business creating the right content that can build and nurture a community, establish your brand as a leader in your space and ultimately generate leads and sales.

This article breaks down the role and function a content marketing specialist plays in your organisation, the skills they need, salary ranges from a variety of markets and lastly, courses that you can take to become a content marketing specialist.

What is a Content Marketing Specialist?

A content marketing specialist is responsible for creating, editing, optimising, and strategising the direction of a company’s content. They’re tasked with ensuring content — regardless of its form — is interesting, relevant, and discoverable. Content marketing specialists also strategise and contribute to the creation and distribution of content. They play a critical role in a company’s inbound marketing strategy, as content can be used in the awareness, consideration, and decision stages of a marketing campaign.

• Develop and implement a content marketing strategy

• Research industry trends and topics to create relevant and valuable content

• Write, edit and proofread various types of content, such as blog posts, articles, and social media posts

• Create and manage a content calendar

• Optimise content for search engines

• Promote content through various channels, such as social media and e-mail marketing

• Analyse and report on the performance of the content

• Collaborate with other teams, such as design and product teams, to create cohesive campaigns

• Stay up-to-date with digital marketing trends and technologies

Content marketing is always changing because the platforms that we are creating content for are always innovating or adding new features for us to create content. That’s why it is imperative that as a business, your marketing team or content marketing specialists need to keep up to date with how content can be used to drive business.

Caribbean businesses need to stop trying to emulate their favourite TikTokers or content creators because nine out of 10 times, the content creators you are trying to emulate are not business owners, nor are they product experts in your industry.

This is the biggest reason why content doesn’t convert for most businesses, the content being created for your business doesn’t help your audience to solve any of the problems in your industry and you are using content creators to tap into a wider audience, but there is no substance to the content, just another ad.

Start focusing on upskilling your marketing team to understand the BUSINESS of CONTENT! Content is the #1 form of marketing in this digital age and it is time for our businesses to start producing content and stop focusing on only producing ads.

Your ads cannot and don’t provide value, the way excellent, insightful, educational, entertaining content can. When you want to spend money on boosting your content, focus on boosting your best performing content.
