Gayle hails expanded Tottori support ahead of Beijing 2027

Gayle hails expanded Tottori support ahead of Beijing 2027

KINGSTON, Jamaica  —  President of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Garth Gayle believes Jamaica’s renewed partnership with Tottori Prefecture will give the country’s athletes a valuable head start in their preparations for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China.

Gayle was speaking at a press conference at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel on Monday, where the JAAA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tottori Prefecture for Jamaica’s pre-championship training camp ahead of the global event.

According to Gayle, getting the arrangements in place early will allow the association, coaches and athletes to plan more effectively for the championships.

“The earlier the better because we are able to do booking of tickets, we can also have the coaches be aware of the plans for leading into Beijing 2027,” Gayle said.

“We want to ensure all the best facilities and all that would be needed for a successful campaign in Beijing 2027.”

Gayle said the latest agreement represents an improvement on previous arrangements with Tottori, with the Japanese prefecture increasing its support in several important areas.

“What the Tottori Prefecture members have done is that they provide more facility, more in the way of technical support,” he said.

“The meals and other arrangements are improved on. The athletes, we also have technical persons that come in to help.”

One of the key benefits of the training camp, Gayle noted, will be the opportunity to organise a trial meet for Jamaica’s athletes.

He recalled the impact of a previous trial meet involving sprint star Oblique Seville, suggesting that such competitions can provide athletes and coaches with an important indication of their readiness.

“We can also plan a trial meet for the athletes because I can remember very fondly the great memory, Oblique running in one of the trial meets,” Gayle said.

The camp will also give Jamaica’s athletes an opportunity to acclimatise to conditions ahead of the championships, while providing coaches and team managers with time to fine-tune preparations.

“There’s not much difference between Japan and Beijing, China, and so this is again an opportunity for both coaches and athletes and managers to be able to get ready for a successful staging,” Gayle said.

The JAAA president believes the combination of improved facilities, technical assistance and competition opportunities will make Tottori an important component of Jamaica’s preparations as the country targets another strong showing at the World Championships.

With the Beijing championships still more than a year away, Gayle is keen for the planning process to begin early, ensuring that the athletes and support team arrive in China fully prepared for the demands of the global championships.
