22-y-o man fatally shot during confrontation with Westmoreland police
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – A 22-year-old man was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with lawmen in Waterworks, Westmoreland on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Shamari Hanson, otherwise called ‘Sammie’ of Gold Smith Lane in the community.
The police say a Taurus pistol affixed with a magazine containing two 9-millimetre rounds was seized in the incident.
Reports from the police are that members assigned to the Westmoreland Proactive Investigation Unit were on mobile patrol duties in the Whithorn Police area when they observed a man dressed in a blue pullover, blue jeans pants and blue slippers approaching from the opposite direction.
On the approach of the police unit, Hanson is said to have run off into heavy bushes.
The report said the officers pursued Hanson into a hilly terrain where it is alleged that Hanson opened gunfire at the officers. One of the officers reportedly took evasive action and returned fire during which Hanson was shot and injured.
The Taurus pistol with a magazine containing two 9-millimetre rounds was reportedly retrieved from him.
He was transported to the Savanna-La-Mar Public General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
