Blake to receive Philadelphia’s John Wanamaker Athletic Award
Reggae Boyz captain and goalkeeper Andre Blake is the recipient of the 2022 John Wanamaker Athletic Award, which is presented annually since 1961 to the “athlete, team or organisation that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel.”
Blake, the custodian for the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer (MLS), joins the likes of NBA legends Wilt Chamberlain, Charles Barkley and Julius Erving, as well as boxing icon Joe Frazier in winning the prestigious award.
The 31-year-old, who currently leads the league in most goalkeeping categories, boasts four MLS all-star selections and two MLS Goalkeeper of the Year awards.
In a statement posted on the website of the Philadelphia Union, Blake expressed gratitude for the recognition.
“I am grateful to be recognised by the Philadelphia sports community and honored to accept the Wanamaker Award on behalf of my family, teammates and the entire Philadelphia Union organization,” Blake said.
“Throughout my career, I have strived to set an example on and off the field of what it means to be a strong leader and community advocate. I hope that I’ve inspired the future generation of young athletes to work hard and keep chasing their dreams,” he added.
The awards presentation and luncheon will take place Wednesday, October 26 at the Crystal Tea Room.
