The Social House bets big on short-form drama ‘The Domino Effect’

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Six prominent digital creators have stepped into a scripted mystery with the release of The Domino Effect, a Jamaican suspense web series that recently premiered on YouTube.

Centred on the sudden disappearance of bride-to-be Rebecca “Becca” Sterling, played by Raquelle Cross, the storyline delivers a classic “whodunit” narrative tailored for the digital age, boasting a star-studded cast that includes Joan McKenzie, K’vonne Legore (Prince Pine), Drezel Simmonds, Reuben Hussey (1Clauze) and Jhaedee Richards (Jaii Frais).

Executive Producer at The Social House, Tara Playfair, explained that The Domino Effect was born out of a growing appetite for original Jamaican drama, backed by audience analytics across major digital platforms.

“We looked at the data coming from channels like YouTube and TikTok to understand where our audience spends their time and how they consume content,” Playfair noted, pointing out that local audiences are increasingly looking for high-quality, homegrown storytelling on the platforms they engage with daily.

With episodes running under four minutes, the hyper-condensed format initially drew mixed reactions from viewers accustomed to traditional, full-length television series.

“Initially, I got a lot of ‘cussing’ [pushback] when Becca’s episode dropped, but I think people have caught on now,” Playfair explained regarding the bite-sized runtime.

“The decision to go short-form was deliberate. Looking at back-end analytics, watch time, retention rates, and social media insights, it’s clear that audience attention spans are changing. Keeping it lean keeps them hooked,” she added.

Each week, an episode drops from the perspective of a different character, culminating in an upcoming grand finale slated for release in late September.

Playfair shared that The Domino Effect aims to showcase modern Jamaican realities by capturing diverse social strata alongside emerging lifestyle trends, highlighted by a seamless integration with electric vehicle brand BYD.

“I wanted to convey a modern lifestyle through non-traditional brand placements. BYD offered a lineup that fits our characters organically,” Playfair explained. “For instance, they have the Shark (an electric pickup truck) which was chosen specifically for Claus, a detective who is a bit of a ‘shark’ himself, someone you aren’t quite sure you can trust. Meanwhile, their sleek Seal model suited Becca, capturing the aesthetic of an uptown driver who wants to conserve fuel while staying stylish. Every vehicle choice was deliberate so the audience could relate to the world on screen.”

Playfair also used the occasion to address the broader potential of Jamaica’s creative industry.

She highlighted that, while she had received support from BYD and Island Village (Ocho Rios), there is a need for stronger synergies between corporate brands and content creators, noting that there are numerous ways to engage a captive audience beyond traditional billboards and standard advertising.

She urged companies to think more expansively and recognise that high-quality digital content allows local brands to extend their reach across the Caribbean and into the international market.
