KINGSTON, Jamaica— Education Minister Fayval Williams is on a five-day study tour of Germany from July 17 to 21, to gain insights into their co-operative public-private system of Technical and Vocational Education, the ministry said.

Organised by the Education Division of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in collaboration with the Deutsche Gessellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the tour is being conducted under the theme ‘From School to Work – First-hand Experience of the German dual Education Model’.

In a release on Wednesday, the ministry explained that the initiative is being implemented within the framework of the IDB-BMZ-GIZ co-operative in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), with the key goal of providing information on how to promote skills through cooperative TVET initiatives to cope with the green transition of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Representatives from the United States and eight other Latin American and Caribbean countries are also participating in the study tour.

“They are expected to look at the operations of state-funded training institutions, and the role of the private sector. The tour includes a visit to the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, recognised as a centre of excellence for vocational research and for the progressive development of technical vocational education and training in Germany,” the education ministry said.

The study tour comes as the MoEY is amplifying the implementation of the education transformation programme. It is expected that while on the tour, Minister Williams will get the opportunity to see dual TVET in action as the ministry rolls out its plans to improve technical and vocational education and training, which is one of the seven focus areas that are being reformed.
