Sangster International Airport undergoing expansion to meet increased passenger traffic
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Authorities at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James are reporting that the port of entry is undergoing expansions to cope with an increase in passenger traffic.
Under the management of MBJ Airports Limited (MBJ), SIA, which is now in its 20th year of the concession, is to benefit from a $500 million investment to ensure the airport is on par with international standards.
In a release on Tuesday, Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang said that in addition to making sure the airport meets international standards, the multi-million dollar investment is also aimed at keeping up with the rapid growth of the tourism industry.
Among the features to be added during the expansions is a new departures loop separating arriving and departing passengers, a larger check-in area, as well as new screening lanes for outbound security. The area at Gates 6 and 7 will also be expanded with the addition of a new ramp and renovation of the space with new tiles and ceiling.
Additionally, the release revealed that a new elevator is to be added at Gate 8 to improve passenger facilitation.
Shane Munroe, chief executive officer of MBJ Airports Limited, also disclosed that the Air-Sea Lounge for passengers flying in to board cruises is also being refurbished and will be ready for use during the current winter tourist season.
