Armed forces represented at Florida Netball Classic
THE Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) netball team is among two sides representing the police force at the 28th staging of the annual Florida Netball Classic International Invitational Tournament under way at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater.
The second team on the 10-day tour, the Jamaica Police Nationals, which includes selections from the constabulary, the island’s police youth clubs and the auxiliary force, won their first match at the tournament which is the largest and most competitive netball carnival in North America.
The Nationals, part-sponsored by American Jewellery Company Limited and Agnew Property Management, started on a winning note by defeating Florida’s Fab Nation 17-5, led by goal attack Marcella Thompson’s 14 points.
The Jamaica Police Nationals are coached by Joan Benjamin and led by Captain Rhoda Moulton.
The JCF team, selected from divisions across the island and the auxiliary force, finished fourth at the last staging of the Classic in 2019. Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie is team manager.
The tournament regularly hosts 40-50 international teams each year, with teams from the Caribbean and the Americas facing opponents from netball powerhouses such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom, all vying for the Grace Bailey Memorial Trophy.
