EPL: Rampant Arsenal take on Liverpool

Brace yourselves for a mouth-watering clash in the English Premier League on Sunday (October 9) when the impressive league leaders Arsenal host struggling Liverpool in a Super Sunday showdown. Before that, tomorrow, Saturday, October 8, current Italian champions AC Milan will host perennial champions Juventus in another blockbuster encounter.

Event # 1 – ITA, AC Milan vs Juventus – 11:00 am

Serie A champions for the first time since 2011, AC Milan appear to have returned to their glory days in Italian football. Based on current form, they intend to fight for the title again this season as they currently occupy fifth place in the standing. Having gone undefeated in their first six matches of the new campaign, Milan were beaten 2-1 by leaders Napoli before the international break. However, like true champions, they rebounded with an impressive 3-1 win over Empoli last weekend to be in high spirits for the visit of Juventus. As impressive as AC Milan have been at home, matches involving Juventus are normally cagey affairs, as both encounters between these teams ended in draws last season.

Following their surprise loss to promoted Monza before the international break, Juventus rebounded impressively with a 3-0 home win over Bologna. AC Milan versus Juventus is one of the most-anticipated fixtures in Italian football, with the ‘old lady’, Juventus, having the upper hand in their head-to-head meetings. However, based on current form, Juventus might be hard-pressed to leave the San Siro with a win having gone winless in their last three away matches in Serie A, and their last eight matches in all competitions. Indeed, AC Milan have not lost to Juventus in their last three matches while Juventus are still searching for their first away win in the league this season.

KEY STATS

AC Milan — have gone unbeaten in four of their last five Serie A meetings against Juventus (W2 D2) after having lost 13 of the previous 14 (W1).

Juventus — have won six of their last nine Serie A meetings against AC Milan at the Mezza Stadium (D1 L2), scoring twice the number of goals that they have conceded in the process (14 vs 7).

Both sides — AC Milan and Juventus drew both of their Serie A matches last season, only twice in their history have they drawn at least three games in a row in the competition: between 1972 and 1973 (four) and between 1938 and 1939 (four).

The betting tip. AC Milan win.

Event # 2 EPL – Arsenal vs Liverpool – 10:30 am

While there will be plenty of twists and turns until the Premier League title is decided in May, Arsenal, for now, seem to be the real deal as they continue to lead the league standings ahead of champions Manchester City. On Sunday, October 9, the Gunners will welcome struggling Liverpool to the Emirates aiming to continue their impressive form by beating the Reds and proving that they are indeed genuine title contenders. Arsenal started the season in impressive form winning their first five matches before a slight stumble which saw them being beaten away by Manchester United. That loss had pundits and fans questioning the Gunners title credentials, however, prior to the international break, they went to Brentford and blasted them 3-0. As if that wasn’t enough to prove that they are the real deal this season, they saved their best performance of the season to date for last week’s London derby, when they hammered a nervous-looking Tottenham 3-1 to be high-on confidence for the visit of Liverpool.

Liverpool have struggled for form so far this season, sitting ninth in the league standing, despite almost winning the title last term. Heading into this vital clash Liverpool have won just twice in the league along with four draws and one defeat from their opening seven matches. If Liverpool are to have any chance in the title race this season, they need to start winning ASAP, but beating an in-form Arsenal at the Emirates won’t be easy, but they have done it before. Indeed, Liverpool have an impressive record against Arsenal, especially since Jurgen Klopp took charge of the team in 2015. With Klopp in charge of Liverpool, the Reds have nine wins, three draws and 1 loss in the league. With that said, fans should brace themselves for a mouth-watering encounter between the league’s best side on current form and a struggling Reds side searching for their best form.

KEY STATS

Arsenal — have won their last seven Premier League home games, their longest run at the Emirates since a run of 10 in 2018-19 under Unai Emery. However, the Gunners haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last nine home league games.

Liverpool — have won their last two away league games against Arsenal, as many as in their previous 20 visits (W2 D9 L9). They’ve never won three consecutive away league matches against the Gunners.

Both sides — Arsenal have won one of their last 14 Premier League matches against Liverpool (D4 L9), a 2-1 home win back in July 2020. They’ve lost their last four in a row but have never lost five league games in a row against Liverpool.

The betting tip. Arsenal win & both teams to score
