Frome hunt back-to-back wins against Green Island
FROME, Westmoreland — Former champions Frome Technical will be going after back-to-back wins in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition today when they host Green Island High at Frome Tech. The game is set to start at 3:30 pm.
Frome Technical opened their season on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Merlene Ottey High and will hope to extend their winning run over Green Island, who they beat both times last season on their way to topping Zone B and getting to the quarter-finals.
Nineteen games are scheduled to be played, including those involving St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and William Knibb Memorial who are both expected to get their seasons off to a winning start.
Meanwhile, former Ben Francis KO winners Edwin Allen got off to a big start, beating Claude McKay High 7-1 to take the lead in Zone H while Wycliffe Martin High won their first game in the competition after edging St Mary High 1-0, in games played on Monday.
Tajay Thomas scored twice for Edwin Allen High while Dyron-Lee Johnson, Patrick Harrion, Jayquan Johnson, Kimolar Ferron, and Jovaine Dyke scored the others.
After drawing two of their 10 first-round games in their first season Wycliffe Martin High created school history, winning their first game by edging St Mary High 1-0.
Tyieis Williams scored in the 20th minute for Kellits High to beat Thompson Town High 1-0 in their Zone High game.
Today STETHS will hope to improve on last year’s performance wherein, despite easily winning their zone, they failed to get past the second round, losing two of three games.
Last season they were able to get the better of Lacovia in both games and they will hope to start well again this season.
William Knibb will hope it is a third-year charm for them after bright starts the last two seasons, but they ran out of steam in the second round.
William Knibb have won 13 of their 15 games played in the first round the last two years but managed only a single point from six games in the second round over the same period.
This year they will play in a different group this season, mostly against St-Ann based schools, but will hope for yet another good start when they face Brown’s Town High at Addison Park.
William Knibb will play Brown’s Town in the first round for the first time since 2009 when they beat the St Ann team twice, 3-2 and 3-0, to finish second behind Marcus Garvey Technical.
