HOBART, Tasmania (CMC) — West Indies captain Hayley Matthews failed in Melbourne Renegades’ 93-run thrashing at the hands of Hobart Hurricanes here Thursday, as the bottom-dwellers of the Women’s Big Bash League continued to limp towards the end of a wretched campaign.

In pursuit of a massive 213 at Bellerive Oval, Renegades collapsed to 119 all out in the 17th over, to register their 11th defeat in 13 outings, to be rock bottom of the standings on four points with one game left on Saturday.

They are guaranteed to finish bottom with Melbourne Stars — who they play in their final game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground — six points above them in seventh in the eight-team league.

Matthews, also the Renegades captain, made 14 from 17 balls at number four, carrying her tally for the season to 238 runs.

Emma de Broughe, batting at number seven, top-scored with a 19-ball unbeaten 40 with eight fours, her 46-run, sixth wicket stand with Georgia Wareham (14) proving the best of the innings.

Renegades were routed by Hobart’s leg-spinners, Maisy Gibson finishing with four for 25 and 19-year-old Amy Smith picking up three for 17.

Earlier, Hurricanes piled 213 for three from their 20 overs after being sent in, South African Lizelle Lee blasting an unbeaten 101 from 53 balls at the top of the order.

She struck a dozen fours and four sixes, putting on 55 for the first wicket with captain Elyse Villani (22), another 55 for the third with Nicola Carey (24), before adding 102 in an unbroken fourth wicket partnership with Heather Graham, who pummelled three fours and three sixes in a 28-ball unbeaten 55.

Matthews saw 45 runs leak from her four overs of off-spin.
