JAMAICA Football Federation (JFF) President Michael Ricketts has outlined what he considers a harsh financial reality facing the body, which is managing a tight cash-flow situation after putting significant resources into national team programmes that ultimately missed out on major qualification payouts.

International football is a high-stakes business, and Ricketts says the JFF is counting the cost of an aggressive push for global recognition that fell short on the pitch.

Failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup cost the JFF a guaranteed minimum payout of at least US$10.5 million to US$12.5 million (under J$2 billion) — a windfall tied to FIFA participation and preparation fees.

For a federation historically hampered by tight budgets, a capital injection of that size could have cleared existing debt, reduced reliance on government subventions, and fully funded grassroots facilities, coaching development, and youth travel across all age groups.

“Right now, it’s challenging,” Ricketts told the Jamaica Observer. “We would’ve invested heavily in so many of the World Cup qualifiers. The U-20s leave [today] to participate in the last round. The ladies will play their last game against Costa Rica in November, and of course the senior men’s team didn’t do as well as we would’ve thought; hence, we did not get the returns based on the investment.”

The immediate strain comes as national squads continue to compete. While the senior men missed their target, the federation must still fund ongoing campaigns, including the departure of the national Under-20 team and the senior women’s team’s crucial November fixture.

Should the Reggae Girlz win that Concacaf W Championship game against Costa Rica, they qualify not only for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, but also for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. At the latter, they would receive a financial payout for competing in the group stage at the very minimum. FIFA has however not yet shared an exact breakdown of monetary prizes for this tournament.

Ricketts defended the heavy spending as a necessary cost of doing business in modern football, where federations must spend aggressively across all age groups just to remain competitive on the world stage.

“There were so many teams vying for global recognition that it cost us a lot of money,” Ricketts said. “So, we are struggling right now financially, simply because we would’ve invested heavily in these programmes and the senior men’s team didn’t qualify.”

Despite the short-term financial challenge, Ricketts says staying visible on the global stage remains the JFF’s best path forward. Mentioning long-term commercial goals, such as Jamaica’s interest in hosting the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Ricketts says the high cost of international football is a necessary investment in the country’s social and technical future.

He believes the star power of players like Khadija “Bunny” Shaw and Jody Brown demonstrates the return on investment that numbers alone cannot capture.

“This is to ensure that we impact the lives of every Jamaican,” Ricketts said. “Everybody wants to be like Bunny Shaw, everybody wants to be like a Jody Brown, everybody wants to be like a Jamaican player. So, we’re very hopeful, we’re optimistic that this will, from a commercial standpoint, from a technical standpoint, from a social standpoint, certainly help our country.”
