Residents of Marlie Mount in Old Harbour, St Catherine are in for a treat this Saturday night when the four remaining sound systems in this year’s renewal of the Guinness Sound of Greatness Competition battle to determine which ones go through to the grand finals.

Initially, only two sounds, Bass Odyssey and Bredda Hype, were to have clashed this weekend but the postponement of last week’s battle between Sound Trooper and Black Widdo in Ewarton, St Catherine, has worked to the benefit of Marlie Mount, that will now witness two clashes instead of one.

When Spanish Town’s Sound Trooper goes up against Frome’s Black Widdo, it will be a clash of a seasoned campaigner and a rookie, the rookie that has eliminated two well-respected sound systems to get to the semi-finals.

King Mello and Black Blunt won’t ever take the poisonous Black Widdo for granted. Bobby Fresh is confident that the work they have done to prepare for this impending clash will see them through to the finals.

Ricky Trooper, however, remains unfazed as he is confident his skills as a sound killer will serve him well. “Clashing is in my blood,” he remarked. “My life is to kill sound.”

Alexandria’s Bass Odyssey will go up against Mountain Side’s Bredda Hype; another case of a veteran sound taking on a dangerous minnow. The principals of Bass Odyssey, the 20-year-old sound system that made its name ‘killing’ other sounds, are well aware the under the rules of the competition the playing field has been levelled so they are taking nothing for granted. “We are not going to under-rate Bredda Hype said Keith Walford, whose camp recently lost one of the Dj’s, who passed due to illness. Still, they have enough depth in their team to unleash the full might of the sound on their opponents who are from the south-central hills of Jamaica.

Bredda Hype took down Black Scorpio and Black Blunt on their way to the semis so Bass Odyssey really holds no terrors for them. Bredda Hype, the mike man after whom the sound is named, is revelling in the exposure the sound has benefitted from because of the GSOG competition. However, despite the appreciated attention they have no intention of becoming complacent. They know they have to be on top of their game to defeat Bass Odyssey and they plan to pull some surprises.

Bredda Hype and Hammer sincerely believe they have what it takes, despite their relative inexperience, to take on and topple any sound. It’s what they do for a living; their very existence depends on it.
