Rock the Sock
Socks before they were stylised

Rock the Sock

Do it yourself

Yes, it’s Thursday, and yes, it’s DIY, but we’re still ‘rocking the cloth’. But this time, it’s actually old socks and it’s not for us, but for dolls. With a designer aunt, and a mum who’s always rocking the cloth, it’s no wonder my daughter says she wants to be a fashion designer when she grows up, and I must say she certainly has the knack for it. She, with her Tia’s guidance, came up with a design for a doll’s dress from her old socks, so she put me to work to help her make more.

She came up with all the designs, and I helped her cut the socks and stitched the pieces together. We even took the designs a step further by using beaded pins as earrings. All you need for this project are:

o Socks and tights (old or new)

o Scissors

o Needle and thread

You will then come up with your designs and cut and stitch to fit your doll. The tube of the socks are perfect for the designs we made, so have fun with your kids with this project and get creative.

1. Frilly top socks, converted to a beautiful gown for Snow White doll2. Another frilly sock makes this beautiful one shoulder gown3. Pink tights made this dress and ribbons were added for ties4. Even leggings were made from leftover pieces of socks
