National Volleyball Player Contracted to Israeli Club
TOP level indoor/outdoor volleyball player Dany Wilson, who has represented Jamaica with distinction, has become the second national volleyball player to sign a contract with an overseas club in the past month.
Wilson, who was voted Best Server in the 2008 Caribbean Volleyball Championships (CVC) and who paired with Mark Lewis to bring notable attention to the country in regional beach volleyball competitions, will now ply his trade in Israel.
Transactions between his old club, Vikings, the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA), the Israeli Volleyball Federation and his new club, Hapoel Kfar Saba, were concluded on Friday, October 22.
Wilson’s contract follows on the heels of that of Lecia Brown, who captained the national female volleyball team during the 2010 CVC. Brown now plies her trade with PTPS Pila in Polish Volleyball League. Her transfer became effective in mid September 2010. Negotiations for the contracting of a third player to a club in Greece was also initiated in September 2010 but the deal fell through.
Major Warrenton Dixon, President of the JaVA, in expressing his pleasure stated that these contracts will contribute significantly to the effort of the JaVA to raise the level of volleyball locally. “The exposure of our club and national players to higher level competitive environments are important building blocks in our drive to transform volleyball into a major sport locally.
“These occurrences set the stage for other contracts to be signed, in a similar way to how outstanding performances by our students who receive scholarships set the stage for others to benefit likewise.”
