Cop face court for soliciting over $350k
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A detective sergeant was this morning offered bail after he appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on corruption charges.
The detective, Dewayne Jonas of the St Andrew Central Police Division is alleged to have solicited over $250,000 and over $100,000 between December 2011 and June 2012 in order to dispose of a case involving the complainant.
In 2011, the complainant was charged by Jonas for robbery with aggravation and illegal possession of firearm. Following this Jonas, through a third party, solicited the money.
A report was made to the then Anti-Corruption Branch, subsequent to an investigation a file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution resulting in this Jonas being charged this morning for breaches of the Corruption Preventions Act.
He was offered bail in the sum of $400,000 and will return to court on Monday July 31, 2017.
