Shaggy’s Hey Sexy Lady hits the silver mark in the UK

Shaggy’s 2002 gold-certified album Lucky Day reeled out three singles, namely Hey Sexy Lady featuring Brian and Tony Gold, Strength of a Woman, and Get My Party On featuring R&B legend Chaka Khan.

Issued as the first single, Hey Sexy Lady didn’t establish its footprint on the major US charts. However, it was successful in several European countries.

On Friday March 27, Hey Sexy Lady was certified silver in the United Kingdom for sales and streaming equivalent exceeding 200,000 units.

Robert Livingston, Shaggy’s former manager and the producer of the song Hey Sexy Lady, recalled the song’s origins in an interview with the Jamaica Observer on Friday.

Hey Sexy Lady was the last song recorded for the album. We needed something upbeat for the project. The beat was made by Christopher Birch and myself from a concept that I had. Birch also did the remix version of the song,” said Livingston.

He added: “It was one of those songs that we had high hopes for based on the reaction that we got when we played it. It didn’t get the love it deserved, but the song fought its way through.”

Recorded at the Long Island, New York, headquarters of the famous Big Yard Studio, Hey Sexy Lady has racked up platinum certification in Australia and Canada and gold in Belgium.

On the charts, it fared well in France reaching #5, #10 in Germany and the United Kingdom, #3 in the Netherlands and Portugal, #7 in Italy, #4 in Australia, #6 in Belgium, and #4 in Canada.

However, in the United States, it stalled at #97 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart and #33 on Rhythmic Airplay.
