Sushi in the Sunshine City

Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards judge Oneal Johnson reviews Zhong Sen Japanese Cuisine

Portmore’s evolving culinary scene continues to expand with the arrival of a modern Japanese dining experience, Zhong Sen Japanese Cuisine. Already making a strong impression, its stylish, contemporary, and thoughtful design delivers an atmosphere that comfortably rivals some of Kingston’s more established sushi spots.

From the moment guests arrive, Zhong Sen Japanese Cuisine sets the tone with sleek décor, modern lighting, and a uniquely welcoming feel. The ambience is polished without being overly formal, making it suitable for casual lunches, date nights, or relaxed evenings with friends.

During my recent visit, I sampled several items from the menu, beginning with the seaweed salad and edamame. Both dishes provided a light and refreshing start to the evening. The seaweed salad offered a pleasant balance of texture and flavour, while the edamame was simple, fresh, and satisfying.

To accompany the meal, I also tried one of the restaurant’s Japanese beers, which added an authentic touch to the overall dining experience, and paired particularly well with the lighter starters and fried dishes.

Among the standout dishes of the evening was the prawn tempura. Lightly battered and fried to a delicate crisp, the prawns maintained their natural sweetness while delivering the signature crunch expected from a quality tempura dish. Well-portioned and attractively presented, it was one of the stronger offerings on the menu.

The crispy fried chicken also impressed. Crunchy, flavourful, and generously portioned, the dish delivered the kind of comforting richness that easily qualifies it for a potential customer favourite.

Equally enjoyable was the tonkatsu pork, which arrived beautifully golden with a crisp exterior while remaining tender and juicy inside. The preparation showcased good attention to texture and balance, rounding out the dining experience nicely.

What makes Zhong Sen Japanese Cuisine particularly noteworthy is its ability to combine modern presentation with approachable dining. While Japanese cuisine continues to gain popularity across Jamaica, restaurants outside of Kingston have often struggled to match the ambiance and execution found in the capital. Zhong Sen appears determined to change that narrative.

As Portmore’s restaurant landscape continues to grow and mature, Zhong Sen Japanese Cuisine positions itself as a welcomed addition — one that not only elevates dining options within St Catherine, but also demonstrates that high-quality, Japanese-inspired dining experiences no longer require a trip into Kingston.
