Jamaica edge Honduras with dramatic late winner in Concacaf U20 opener

Jamaica beat Honduras 2-1 in their opening Concacaf Under-20 Championships Group C game at Estadio Universitario BUAP in Puebla, Mexico on Sunday.

A stoppage time goal from Brandon Bent broke the 1-1 tie as Jamaica won their first game in the Championships since 2022 and are tied for the group lead with Canada who beat Panama 3-0 in the other game in the zone played earlier in the day.

Jamaica had taken the lead in the first half before giving up the lead in the 75th minute as the Central Americans took over the game in the second half.

Jahmarie Nolan scored the game’s first goal in the 21st minute when his shot from the right side of the Honduras 18-yard box got by goalkeeper Alan Cury and just inside the far post.

Kimarly Scott had a chance to double the lead later in the half when he faced Cury alone but shot straight to the Honduran goalkeeper.

Honduras rallied in the second half, pushing the Jamaican team back into their own area and were rewarded in the 75th minute when Victor Salazar finished off a smart team move, scoring with their first shot on target.

Jamaica got the winner late, in time added, when Honduras failed to clear a ball from a corner and Bent was quickest to it, shifted to his left to create space before firing the ball over the diving Cury.

Starting team
Joshua Grant, Jaquan Brown, Jahmarie Nolan, Jermaine Young, Jabarie Howell, Jahmani Bell, Sean Leighton, Duwayne Burgher, Santana Headley, Kimarly Scott, Brandon Bent.
