KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican sprint star Shericka Jackson has brought an abrupt end to her 2026 season, revealing that she is taking time away from competition to focus on her mental health.

The 32-year-old Jackson, one of Jamaica’s leading sprinters, announced the decision in a candid social-media post, on Instagram on Tuesday, admitting that it was not how she wanted her season to end.

“Just when I’m finally finding my rhythm again, here comes mid-2026 season messing with my mental health,” Jackson wrote, while acknowledging that her journey had been a difficult one.

The sixth-fastest woman of all time over the 100m at 10.65 and the second-fastest over the 200m at 21.41, Jackson said she was nevertheless holding on to “a little faith and hope”, suggesting that she remains optimistic about returning to competition next season.

Jackson did not provide details about what specifically led to her decision, but her openness about her struggles has brought attention to the mental demands faced by elite athletes.

Despite the disappointment, she expressed gratitude to her supporters.

“To my amazing family and friends, sponsors and the ones who support me no matter what. I appreciate it,” she said.

Her message also drew encouragement from members of the athletics community, including coach Lennox Graham, who responded: “Keep persevering young lady. Massive test, powerful testimony!!! God bless. Love and blessings, Shericka.”

“Chin up, Shericka. You will be back, better and stronger,” another supporter wrote. “We love you Shericka…hoping and praying that you will bounce back stronger than ever,” added another.

Jackson’s absence will be a notable one for Jamaican athletics, given her record of success on the international stage. She has established herself as one of the world’s premier sprinters, with major championship medals and consistently strong performances over the years.

For now, however, Jackson appears intent on putting her well-being first.

Her decision also reinforces the growing conversation around mental health in elite sport, where athletes face enormous physical demands alongside the pressure of competition, expectations and public scrutiny.
