Funeral for Ras Ajai set for September 26

The funeral service for singjay/actor Ras Ajai is scheduled for September 26 at Boulevard Baptist Church in St Andrew, his management has announced.

Ras Ajai, a member of Sean Paul’s Dutty Rock Productions, was killed in Waterford, St Catherine on August 1. He had arrived in Jamaica hours earlier from the United States.

Another man was shot and injured in the incident which took place in the Third World section of the Portmore community. There have been no arrests in the case.

The 43 year-old Ras Ajai made his acting debut in Bob Marley: One Love, the 2024 Paramount Pictures movie based on the life of the reggae legend. He played Claudius Massop, the West Kingston enforcer who was Marley’s close friend.

Love Is Kind, one of Ras Ajai’s final recordings, was released on September 4. It is produced by Money Matters Entertainment for that company’s He Say/She Say rhythm.

Stanicia Pate, a spokesperson for his management, told Observer Online that Ras Ajai had a cache of songs for release.

“There is more music, he has an arsenal of songs. Love Is Kind was actually scheduled for release, so we’re honouring what was already in motion,” she said. “Beyond that, there is music and material he left behind, but we don’t want to rush to release things simply because he’s no longer here.”

Ras Ajai, whose real name was Brian Todd Boucher, was raised in Waterford. He lived in New York City for many years and recorded and toured with Sean Paul.

Known for songs like Well Misbehave and Vice Grip, Ras Ajai is also featured on Buss A Bubble, Sean Paul’s 2019 single. That track is from Live N Livin, Sean Paul’s album which was nominated for a 2022 Best Reggae Album Grammy Award.
