Ninety-six students from across the corporate area were the beneficiaries of scholarships awarded by the Police Area Four Civic Committee Education Trust Fund at a recently held awards ceremony at the Police Officers’ Club in St Andrew.

The students are from schools within Police Area Four which comprises the Motorised Patrol, St Andrew Central, St Andrew South, Kingston Western, Kingston Eastern and Kingston Central divisions.

The Area Four Police Civic Committee Education Trust Fund is a pool of money raised from private sector donations to provide scholarships to children in financial need who are within the high risk age group of 12-18 years.

The children are proposed by the police community safety and security coordinators within each division in collaboration with principals, teachers and guidance counsellors at each school.

Guest speak at the awards ceremony, Chairman of the Grace Kennedy Group Douglas Orane shared a vibrant and engaging address on the topic ‘How to become a global citizen from a Jamaican high school’.

“I implore all the awardees to develop important attributes, develop strong competencies in the English language and to explore potential career opportunities. Having an understanding of foreign cultures provides a plethora of opportunities, easily accessed in this technological era,” he urged.

“You have a huge advantage today; you do not need to leave the shores of Jamaica to learn about the experiences of others. You have access to an incredible amount of information on the internet where you can learn about any topic in the greatest detail. Make use of this-the greatest invention of the last 30 years,” Orane further challenged the awardees.
