Algix Fisheries to expand
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The management of Algix Fisheries and Hatchery have announced that after years of experimenting, it has now successfully managed to breed and produce the Pangassias (Bassa) fish in Jamaica.
The successful breeding and production of this fish will make Jamaica the first country in the region to successfully produce this breed of fish in commercial quantities, and as such the company will be expanding in order to supply the demand locally and to enter the export market.
The company said in a release that officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, including junior Minister, JC Hutchinson are slated to take a tour of its production and processing facilities at Barton Isles in St Elizabeth on Friday.
The company said it commenced experimenting with the breeding of the fish in 2013, which is said to be imported in large volumes from South East Asia.
