Appleton incident leads to 30-gallon oil leak into Black River
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Around 30 gallons of oil was released into the Black River this morning, after an incident at the factory on the Appleton Estate.
According to J Wray & Nephew, propietors of the Appleton Estate, the leakage happened when a gearbox at the Appleton Factory developed a leak due to a failed internal gasket. This allowed the oil to empty into the cooling water flow.
In a release, the company said they have issued notices to its neighbours and the National Environment Planning Agency (NEPA).
They have further begun testing of the waters and taken corrective measures including the deploying a containment boom and absorbent material.
