Bunting to make statement in Parliament on Commissioner’s departure
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of National Security, Peter Bunting, will make a statement Tuesday, July 15 in Parliament on the sudden departure from office of Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington.
Bunting is expected to address the controversy which has developed since the Commissioner’s decision to quit on July 1, a day after handing the minister and the Police Services Commission a retirement letter.
Ellington’s reasons for retiring were based on the need to separate himself from the leadership and management of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) prior to the commencement of the upcoming Commission of Enquiry into the conduct of the Operations of the Security Forces in Western Kingston and other areas during the limited State of Emergency in 2010. However, the media and the public have not been convinced by his reasons.
The statement is expected to highlight Tuesday’s sitting of the House which commences at 2:00 pm.
