Calabar athlete slashed in robbery attempt
KINGSTON, Jamaica — OBSERVER ONLINE has learnt that Calabar High School middle distance runner, Javon-Taye Williams, was attacked and his hand slashed with a knife during an attempted cellphone robbery last week Friday.
Williams was said to be on his way home from a party when he was pounced upon and received minor injuries. He was taken to hospital and released the same night.
The athlete was instrumental in Calabar defending their ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls Athletics Championship title as the school gained their sixth consecutive victory and their 27th lien on the Mortimer Geddes trophy.
Williams was second in the Class One 1500m in 3:54.21 minutes behind the winner Ackeem Colley of Rusea’s High with 3:53.27.
Williams was the talking point after he suffered interference in the 800m from Kingston College’s Colin Rowe and finished eighth, but was later promoted to seventh with the disqualification of Rowe.
That was a significant result that played a crucial role in Calabar’s three-point victory over KC. Had Rowe not suffered the disqualification, both Calabar and KC would have finish levelled on points with KC emerging champions based on the tie-breaker, which would have been the most wins between the two schools.
