Education Ministry investigating Cumberland High principal-student incident
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Director of Safety and Security in Schools, Assistant Superintendent of Police Coleridge Minto has reported that the Ministry of Education is currently conducting a high level investigation into last Friday’s incident involving the principal and a student at the Cumberland High School in St Catherine.
He said “the ministry is aware of the unfortunate situation that took place on Friday and we are here today conducting a thorough investigation looking into the circumstances.
The incident resulted in the smashing of the back window of the principal’s car.
Reports are that the third form female student was reacting to being reprimanded by the Principal Michael Brydson just before dismissal of school on Friday evening.
Teachers at the secondary institution withdrew their services yesterday and despite the full complement of staff that turned out today, teaching has not resumed.
Minto, who met with the principal this morning, said that only 20 per cent of the student population reported for school and are being supervised by the teachers who are present.
“There are a number of concerns coming from the staff as it relates to their overall safety as well as behavioural issues of student and we are looking at it in a fullsome way,” he added.
Minto was accompanied by a high level team, led by Patrice Supria, Acting Regional Director, from the Education Ministry.
