Increased funding for primary schools but JTA says it is not enough
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Education Minister, Senator Ruel Reid, has announced that a 150 per cent increase in funding is on the horizon for the country’s primary schools.
Reid, who was addressing delegates attending the annual conference of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) being staged at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa in St James, said the current allocation which amounts to J$1,100 per student is appalling.
JTA President Howard Isaacs said in his inaugural speech on Monday that even a 300 per cent increase in the primary school grant would not be sufficient.
However, the education minister said, come next year, the government will double the per capita allocation to each primary school student.
