JLP MPs discuss court ruling
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Most of the members attending Tuesday night’s meeting of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) elected Parliamentarians (MPs) seemed agreed that there is no challenge to Andrew Holness’ leadership.
Approximately 19 of the party’s 29 MPs attended the meeting at the party’s Belmont Road headquarters, which focused on a report from the party’s legal team on its interpretation of the recent Constitutional Court ruling.
Following what appeared to be a very peaceful four-hour plus of consultations between the MPs and the party’s legal team, the general consensus was that nothing new had emerged.
“There is really nothing to report,” said MP Daryl Vaz, considered one of MPs opposed to Holness’ leadership style.
Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, Derrick Smith, concurred that the basic issue was, as he had predicted, to inform the MPs of the party’s legal position on the court issues.
Notably absent from the meeting were Member of Parliament for North Eastern St Andrew Delroy Chuck, whose call for the resignation of Opposition Leader Andrew Holness over the Senate issue led to the meeting, and MP for North Eastern St Catherine, Gregory Mair.
