KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAC) City Inspectorate served public health and encroachment notices on several scrap metal operators in February.

Police from the St Andrew South police division also recovered in excess of 40 pounds of marijuana and made three arrests at a scrap metal facility at 70 Chisolm Avenue, it was reported at the March7 KSAC Roads and Traffic Committee meeting.

The report stated that the City Inspectorate in collaboration with the police and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) visited eight scrap metal sites on February 24.

The report cited the City Inspectorate’s concerns about the health risks attached to the burning of tyres for metal and to rodent and pest infestation if the scrap metal items are improperly stored.

Encroachment notices were served for storing scrap items on the sidewalk and the inspectorate also said that there were security risks attached to the trade, as criminals could use the encroachments as cover for various illegal items.

Locations visited by the team include scrap metal sites at Pottinger Avenue, Oakland Avenue, Thrift Avenue and York Avenue.
