MPs on tropical storm alert
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Members of Parliament have been put on standby for a possible emergency meeting today at Jamaica House on emergency measures in case Tropical Storm Matthew hits mainland Jamaica this weekend.
Leader of the House of Representatives, Derrick Smith, informed members yesterday that there is a possibility of TS Matthew intensifying and storming Jamaica between Friday and Saturday, “bringing heavy winds and lots of water”.
“Accordingly, we are asking all MPs to standby for a possible meeting at Jamaica House tomorrow afternoon,” he told members.
“We have not confirmed just yet, but we asking the MPs to standby for a meeting tomorrow afternoon,” he reiterated.
He said that rural MPs would be given ample notice to reach Kingston in time for the meeting.
The Meteorological Service of Jamaica this morning said TS Matthew is expected to gradually strengthen during the next couple of days, and could become a hurricane by tonight.
