May Pen Hospital apologizes to mother of dead 3-y-o
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Southern Regional Health Authority (SERHA) and the May Pen Hospital have apologized to the mother of the three-year-old child who died while undergoing treatment on January 6, 2017.
SERHA in a news release this morning said that the senior management team of the May Pen Hospital yesterday met with Nadine Dennis, mother of three year old, Andrew Stephens, who they say have since accepted the apology and is to receive counselling support.
SERHA said that Dennis had expressed serious concerns about the level of care given to her child at the May Pen Hospital when she took him to the Accident and Emergency Department at 3: 50 am on January 6, 2017 with a complaint of vomiting, but was sent home.
SERHA said she returned with him to the hospital later at 9:00pm when he was re-assessed and a deterioration in his condition observed. According to SERHA, efforts were made to resuscitate the child, but unfortunately he died.
The May Pen Hospital said it has noted the seriousness of the allegations and is treating the matter as such. The hospital added that the meeting with the child’s mother forms part of the ongoing and in-depth investigation into the matter.
