National student council outraged by killing of JC student
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Secondary Students’ Council (NSSC) is today calling on the government to increase police patrols to monitor buses in light of the recent stabbing death of Jamaica College student, Nicholas Francis.
The group, in a news release on Thursday, said it is “saddened and outraged at the brutal attack that resulted in the death Francis.”
“It is the stance of the NSSC that lives of students must be a priority for protection, as they are often times vulnerable to perpetrators who see them as easy targets.”
The NSSC is amplifying the call for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to increase patrols to monitor buses and zones that students frequent in a bid to ensure their safety.
The group is also urging students to be more observant of their surroundings and reduce the use of electronic devices, as this negatively affects their ‘state of alertness’.
The NSSC also advising students and citizens to download from the Google Play Store, the Ministry of National Security’s ‘Stay Alert’ app, which provides information on matters of safety and security and is equipped with a ‘panic mode’ feature that sends an alert to the police that the user is in danger.
While conveying condolence to Francis’ family and school community, the NSSC say they are making a special appeal to individuals who witnessed this “ghastly attack” to come forward and assist the JCF in their investigations.
