Opposition accuses Warmington of political bias with drain cleaning allocation
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition spokesperson for works, Richard Azan, in a news release Tuesday, expressed concern about what he said is a seemingly overt political action of the Minister of State with responsibility for Works Everald Warmington, in the direct issuance of drain cleaning allocation to Jamaica Labour Party councillors only, while bypassing elected members of Parliament.
He said: “Such actions are in contravention of the respected and accepted norm of proper and accepted governance and should cease immediately.”
According ti Azan, it is the custom and practice, at least when the People’s National Party forms the government, to make annual allocation to the respective members of Parliament without party alignment or favour for drain cleaning.
The member of Parliament from Clarendon North Western said he is calling on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to intervene and immediately stop, as part of his promise to the nation, the clear political victimisation of his Government ministers and to ensure that the people’s elected representatives are not deliberately bypassed and side-lined by the actions of Warmington.
“We the Opposition have committed our support to the Government in this time of a possible national crisis and we expect that the least that should be done, is the return of an expected and practiced non-political deed, in the interest of our nation and our people.”
