PNP candidate in Portmore by-election has no vote
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — People’s National Party (PNP) candidate in today’s Greater Portmore North by-election, Gary Nicholson has described his inability to vote as “unfortunate”.
Nicholson, who is hoping to retain the division for the party following the death of his PNP colleague Councillor Michael ‘Fisher’ Edwards, does not live in the division.
The Local Government Act dictates that a person must live in the division to vote for a candidate.
“I won’t be able to vote today because unfortunately I don’t live in Greater Portmore North,” Nicholson told OBSERVER ONLINE when contacted this morning.
In the meantime, Jamaica Labour Party candidate Ann Marie Lewis registered her vote sometime after 11:00 am at Ascot High School.
“I have been doing the rounds; everything is going good so far and I am confident,” she shared.
Voting is expected to end at 5:00 pm.
The Electoral Commission of Jamaica said a 14.66 per cent voter turnout was recorded between 7:00 and 11:00 am. Some 10, 677 people are eligible to vote.
