PNP candidates face integrity commission tomorrow
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Candidates seeking to represent the governing People’s National Party (PNP) in upcoming parliamentary elections will face the party’s integrity commission tomorrow.
PNP General Secretary Paul Burke told OBSERVER ONLINE a short while ago that the aspirants will be interviewed by the commission.
Following the interview, a confidential report will be submitted to the party president, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who will make the final decision as to whether a candidate is put forward.
The commission is chaired by the Rev Wellesley Blair.
In 2010, the PNP unveiled a five-member Integrity Commission and announced that all its members of parliament and prospective candidates would be assessed by it to determine if they are fit and proper persons to represent the party.
At that time, Simpson Miller said the region’s oldest political party was actively confronting issues affecting the movement, and was taking definitive steps to solve them in the interest of the people it serves.
